Marcellus D. Ross was born on 3 June 1842 in Champaign County, Ohio to John William and Christenia (Wambaugh) Ross.
Marcellus was eight years old in the 1850 census and he and his family were living with his grandmother, Elizabeth Ross in Harrison. Ten years later, the family went through a lot of upheavals during the year of the 1860 census. First, his father died in April and then his mother died the following September. He was eighteen and listed as a farmer in the census and it also noted that he was still in school. The final months of the year were spent working out the probate and guardianships for the orphaned family.
Marcellus enlisted as a Private in the Union army in Ohio on 3 September 1861. He went into Company G, Ohio 1st Infantry Regiment. Early in 1862, his regiment was involved in the Battle of Shiloh. That was just the beginning of an active participation in fighting over the next two years. Marcellus was discharged on 24 August 1864.
