Marcellus D. Ross (1842-1909)

Marcellus D. Ross was born on 3 June 1842 in Champaign County, Ohio to John William and Christenia (Wambaugh) Ross.

Marcellus was eight years old in the 1850 census and he and his family were living with his grandmother, Elizabeth Ross in Harrison. Ten years later, the family went through a lot of upheavals during the year of the 1860 census. First, his father died in April and then his mother died the following September. He was eighteen and listed as a farmer in the census and it also noted that he was still in school. The final months of the year were spent working out the probate and guardianships for the orphaned family.

Marcellus enlisted as a Private in the Union army in Ohio on 3 September 1861. He went into Company G, Ohio 1st Infantry Regiment. Early in 1862, his regiment was involved in the Battle of Shiloh. That was just the beginning of an active participation in fighting over the next two years. Marcellus was discharged on 24 August 1864.

Marcellus and Ginnette Wilson were married on 20 February 1868 in Boone County, Iowa. Ginnette was the daughter of William Blake and Mary F. (Hanson) Wilson born 11 October 1840 in Illinois. Ginette died 27 November 1874 and she was buried in the Mineral Ridge Cemetery in Ridgeport, Boone, Iowa.

Marcellus and Ginnette had the following children:

  • William Edward Ross was born 3 December 1868 and died 13 January 1871.
  • Anna Florence Ross was born 24 January 1870 in Iowa and died in 1957.

Marcellus married second, Malinda Caroline Modlin about 1877. Malinda was the daughter of Elwood and Hannah Modlin and was born 23 December 1855 in Iowa.

In 1880, Marcellus and Malinda were living in Montana, Jewell, Kansas. They had Anna living with them and a young son, Albert, who was about a year old. By 1900 they had several more children and were still living in Montana, Kansas.

Malinda died on 16 July 1902 at the age of 46. She was buried in the Burr Oak Cemetery in Burr Oak, Jewell, Kansas. Marcellus died on 1 October 1909 and was also buried in the Burr Oak Cemetery.

Marcellus and Malinda had the following children:

  • Albert Carpenter Ross born 23 July 1879 and died 1946.
  • Marcellus D. Ross born February 1881 in Kansas.
  • John E. Ross born November 1882 in Kansas.
  • Ray V. Ross born December 1888 in Kansas.
  • Clyde Wambaugh Ross born 16 March 1892 in Kansas and died 19 February 1964 in San Francisco, California.
  • Emmet H. Ross was born in March 1899 in Kansas.
